
Tom is co-founder of Connect International. He has more than 20 years of experience in development work as a consultant and as director of Foundation Connect International. Main areas of expertise include:
• Production of quality systems, manuals, operational protocols, and proposals for emergency and development projects and programs in developing countries with a main focus on community development and water and sanitation.
• Operational management of international development organizations.
• Management of participative development, rehabilitation and emergency programs.
• Policy development, assessments and evaluations of the organizational, institutional and sector aspects of emergency and development programs and organizations.
• Training of expatriate and local staff (emergency watsan, disaster preparedness, community and NGO development, participative approaches and programs)
• Facilitation of capacity building in local and international NGO’s.
• Development, implementation and facilitation of demand driven approaches in small-scale self-help programs.
• Development of national drinking water and sanitation strategies/policies.
• Institutional Development (for water, sanitation and community development).
• Application of participative methods (OOPP, RRA, PRA, AI).
Tom completed his study Tropical Agricultural Engineering Agricultural University of Wageningen in The Netherlands in 1988. He worked for many years in many of the large emergencies of the nineteen nineties (Sudan, North Kenya, Rwanda, Albania/Kosovo, etc.) functioning as manager of water and sanitation programs in camps, and coordinating NGO's for UN organizations in their water and sanitation programs. He started working as a consultant in 1995, being involved in evaluations, development of guidelines and writing of policies int he field of water and sanitation, emergencies, development and capacity building of local NGO's. As a director of Foundation Connect International he has been extensively involved in the development of and training NGO's in a large number of quality systems and software systems for local NGO's involved in community development and low-cost (SMART Techs) watsan technologies.
