SMART Dev

This module comprises a methodology, fact sheets and implementation and training manuals for community development in rural and slum communities. It focuses on the actions to be executed by the different involved actors with guiding tools for each of these actors. Main actors include:

  1. Village Action Groups (groups with representatives of 20 to 30 households that meet weekly or bi-weekly to discuss issues of importance to them, ideas etc. and develop and undertake action regarding these issues).
  2. Village committees - these committees organize and manage certain issues, like a watsan committee organizing the implementation of water and sanitation facilities and the funding or credit structures required for it. Each VAG elects two to three VAG leaders who are intensively trained and guided and provided with education material to facilitate their VAG to discuss issues and undertake action.
  3. Community leaders - they are trained and guided to facilitate and stimulate the community development process in their communities.
  4. Community coaches - these are people who are trained and guided to facilitate the cooperation and communication between the communities and the support organization. They are selected by the support organization from a list of candidates proposed by the communities who will be working with the coach.
  5. Community Development Officers - These are the supervisors of the community coaches, training, guiding and supervising each about 6 to 8 community coaches.
