Groundwater recharge

Ground Water Recharge

Target audience

Drilling teams
Fieldworkers of NGO's involved in monitoring or supervising the production of boreholes and groundwater recharge systems

Summary

Many water wells and boreholes in Africa, especially hand dug wells, dry up at the end of the dry season. This is because more water is taken out than is coming in by the natural recharge. Reasons for limited groundwater recharge can be compact topsoil layers, loss of vegetation, increased erosion, etc.

There are several ways to increase the recharge of ground water. In this manual we explain two low-cost options that enable rainwater, that otherwise would run off to rivers or evaporate, to penetrate into the groundwater (aquifers):

  1. Tube recharge systems
  2. Rain water harvesting with Vetiver
