Water treatment is important because many poor households obtain water from contaminated sources. Even if households have access to tapstands, the water from the pipeline system is often contaminated due to cracks in the pipes, a contaminated source and absence of effective treatment within the system. Households may boil the water, chlorinate it or filter the water. We focus on a low-cost water filter, the Siphon filter, which is highly effective in removing bacteria and parasites, only costs about 8 to 10 Euro for the end client, and is very user friendly.
